Census 2010: 10 Questions, 10 Minutes, Tell 10 People
The City of Kalamazoo is well on its way to Census 2010. We encourage you to spend 10 minutes answer 10 questions that will enhance our community. While you're at it, tell 10 friends to do the same and let your voice be heard!
When you fill out the census form, you’re making a statement about what resources your community needs going forward.
Accurate data reflecting changes in your community are crucial in apportioning seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and deciding how more than $400 billion per year is allocated for projects like new hospitals and schools.
That's more than $4 trillion over a 10-year period for things like new roads and schools and services like job training centers.
Our Community's Response to Census 2010
The Kalamazoo Complete Count Committee (KCCC) is a collaboration of various organizations created to help maximize our community’s response to the 2010 United States Census. Together, the cities of Kalamazoo and Portage alongside Kalamazoo County, Community Action Agency, League of Women Voters, Disability Resource Center, Michigan Citizens Action and Kalamazoo Public Library have worked collaboratively to educate our community about the importance of completing and returning the Census.
Faith Based Community
KCCC understands the importance and influence the faith based community yields to our efforts to ensure that every resident, citizen and non-citizen is counted.
March 20-21, 2010 was designated Census Weekend for Faith Based institutions in our County. Congregations of all faiths were encouraged to join together in a commitment to promote the importance of the census.
Education Community
The week of March 22, 2010 was Census Week in the Schools in Kalamazoo County. Most schools received materials, posters and flyers that were used in classrooms both as guides and teacher handouts. All KRESA schools joined together in a commitment to promote the importance and historical significance of the census, a historical moment for some students as it will be the first time they are counted.
Countywide Billboard Campaign
Area celebrities were asked to participate in our Census awareness and education initiative. In cooperation with Adams Outdoor, several billboards are displayed around Kalamazoo with messages about the Census germane to our community.
